Is the plane in the new teaser image the Avenger?

Yesterday, the Call of Duty website released another blurry teaser image. This time around, it looks to be some sort of plane. While others have guessed that it is a Spy Plane or a Blackbird, Reddit user millionsofplankton believes that it is in fact, the Predator C (now known as the General Atomics Avenger). This seems plausible as it would fall into line with Treyarch's choice of the Quadrotor. Reason being: Both the Quadrotor and the Predator C are pieces of technology that are currently being tested. i.e. both will be used in the near future. Here is a picture of the teaser image showing the Predator C:

The future is not as far off as most people think - We're not ready for it

The Call of Duty website released another teaser today. Basically, it was an image that said:
.This reinforces what many people have already been thinking. That Black Ops 2 will be set in the near future. Why? Because two of the possible killstreaks (the Quadrotor and the Avenger) are both prototype drones that are set to be used in future combat. Some people have also speculated that the game could involve time travel, although I personally doubt that.at4:04 AM

Leaked screenshots

Apparently, screenshots of the upcoming Black Ops 2 game were leaked by a special effects company. The reason these screenshots are believed to be official is because the Quadrotor appears in them. In case you didn't already know, the Quadrotor appeared as a teaser image on the official Call of Duty website.

Firstly, here is a piece of leaked art. Note that this isn't a screenshot. This is simply a piece of art that would normally be used in promotional posters etc. Notice the Quadrotor in the background.

When is Blacks Ops 2 released?

Set in the future

It looks as if the pre-order page for Black Ops 2 on the official Call of Duty website went live by mistake and a few people managed to grab a screenshot of the page in question. On the page, a description of the game said that Black Ops 2 will actually be set in the near future. Here's a screenshot of the page (which has been blocked since):

What will be the top level prestige on Black Ops 2?

In Black Ops 2, it looks as if you will have to work your way through 55 levels before you can hit the prestige button. This is opposed to the previous Call of Duty game (MW3), where you had to reach level 80 before you could get into the next prestige. Note that this information was gleaned from the multiplayer demo at E3, so it could be changed before release (although I doubt it).

There's still no information regarding how many prestiges will be in Black Ops 2. Usually, you'd bet your money on 10, but who knows; Treyarch could follow Infinity Ward's lead and add in an extra 5. My best guess would be 10.at5:07 AM

When will the multiplayer reveal be released?

Let's face it: Most Call of Duty fans only care about the multiplayer side of things. While I say that I like hearing news about the upcoming single player, there's always that voice in the back of my head that says "Shut up and tell me about the goddamn multiplayer!"

Fortunately, it looks as if a reveal trailer is set for mid-August, which is earlier than last year's reveal, which took place in September.

This is according to Treyarch's David Vonderhaar, who told everyone on Twitter that information about Black Ops 2's multiplayer will be released in 7 or 8 weeks.at4:49 AM

Nuketown 2025 bonus map

It looks as if those who preorder Black Ops 2 will be given a bonus map called Nuketown 2025. This is extremely interesting because of a number of reasons:

Firstly, it kind of confirms people's expectations that Black Ops 2's multiplayer will be set in the future. Although we've already been told that the single player would take place in a near-future setting, there has been no real confirmation about whether or not the multiplayer will follow the same time frame. Now that we know there will be a futuristic version of Nuketown, we can safely guess that the Black Ops 2 multiplayer will also be based on the near future.

Secondly; how will people react to this? Being awarded free DLC for pre-ordering is often frowned upon by ardent gamers who feel as if publishers are already making enough money as it is. It's definitively not a subject that is without controversy. Although, it has to be said: it is much better than awarding people extra guns or perks.

Who is Cordis Die?

Today, Treyarch released a new trailer called "Villain" for Black Ops 2:

In the trailer, a US general is taking to the camera:
He's like... a celebrity now. People, in America... idolize him. They'll wake up tomorrow and realize that their hero... has wiped them out! We've used advanced technology to track him... and he's just... disappeared! Where the hell is he? He doesn't need his own weapons. He's got ours.
The interesting thing about this trailer is the fact that it shows a Youtube channel owned by somebody called "Cordis Die". This channel has 55,867,489 subscribers and 678,546,724 total upload views. After searching around on YT, I found a new YT account owned by a user called cordisdie. The channel is completely blank, except for one video:

In it, a man with a foreign accent says:
Come, my friends. It is not too late to seek a newer world.

So, what does it all mean? Who is the grey-haired man in the trailer that is talking to Frank Woods? What did he mean when he said "It begins?" What is his mission? So many questions...

If you look up the word "CORDIS", you'll find that it stands for Community Research and Development Information Service, which is an interactive online portal that aims to support European research and innovation. Whether or not this has anything to do with it remains to be seen.

As for the story: My guess is that you take control of Mason's son and that this is the character you will be chasing (only to find out he's really the good guy and that your superiors have been misleading you). I'm also guessing that this Cordis Die guy is opposed to way technology has taken over the world / military. It also seems as if the US army / government will be the "bad guy" for most of the story.

Well, it's official. The COD currency point system that featured in the previous Treyarch game will not be returning in Black Ops 2. While speaking to NowGamer about the return of wager matches, David Vonderhaar said:
In Black Ops they were called Wager Matches, and there was the ‘gambling’ component. But those somewhat oddball, out-of-context, just kind of fun game modes are actually going to make a fairly significant return in Black Ops 2, as what we call Party Games. He then went on to state that the currency system would no longer be involved:
Party games is how we think about that – we think about them as you and I just goofing off, having some fun in this arguably slightly silly game mode. We love making those game modes, and they’ll be a part of this game too. They just don’t have the mechanic of gambling in them in that way, because there are no .In case you've no idea what actually are: They were a currency system that allowed you to purchase weapons and attachments instead of unlocking them via leveling up. Can't Knife Turrets

Today, David Vonderhaar announced on Twitter that players will be unable to knife any of the Turrets found in the upcoming Black Ops 2 multiplayer. You in Black Ops 2 MP. It was destroying where they were they existed in the power/value band.If you played the previous game, you'd know that SAM Turrets were sitting ducks because a) they showed up on the map when they fired and b) they were easily destroyed with a one-hit knife. Unemployment, Ben Bernanke And Self-Fulfilling Prophecies

Jim Watson/Getty Images

Any questions?

What people think is going to happen to the economy has a huge influence over what actually happens. If you can change peoples' expectations, you can change the world.

The Federal Reserve knows this. And, as Robert Smith pointed out this morning, Ben Bernanke and the Fed have been using the power of expectations more and more in recent years.

This afternoon, the Fed took another huge step in this direction.

The Fed just released a policy statement that is a very big deal not so much because of the specific actions the Fed announced, but because of the language the Fed used, and the expectations that language will create.

The Fed announced a new plan to buy $40 billion of mortgage bonds every month. It's the third round of quantitative easing

Free Game Friday: Surreal Robot Battles and Puzzling RPGs

This week’s games will have you fighting robots and puzzling your way past monsters but the biggest free game on this week’s list is a free multi-platform first person puzzle game where you’ll be manipulating gravity for your own purposes.

Deepak Fights Robots

Deepak Fights Robots is, if nothing else, true to its title. You’ll be playing mild-mannered Deepak, who is mysteriously (and surreally) kidnapped to the land of robots where he has to collect glowing power ups to become powerful enough to fight his mechanical pursuers. The game plays about like a platforming Pac-man but it’s real charm is in it’s music and tongue-in-cheek world.

Encounter

Encounter is a delightful combination of a classic puzzle game and an old-school JRPG. It can also be a little bit complicated, since the game is in Japanese (and hosted on Geocities, to boot). Essentially you’re presented with a field of characters looking to defeat some powerful enemies. You can attack them by selecting any row, column or diagonal selection of four heroes. Each hero type has a different effect (the healer heals you, the mage attacks in an area, the warrior does great base damage, etc) and the more of one type of hero you manage to select at once the more effective they become.

Force: Leashed

Force: Leashed is both a wonderful pun and a physics-based puzzler you can download for free for Windows, Mac OS X or Linux. You’ll be manipulating gravity to hit targets, open doors and find your way to the exit. As the game’s website says. It’s not like Portal

We’ve got a lovely little 3D puzzle platformer and another simulator game for you this week, but the big story in free games right now is that an entire MMO has been released for free. Not free to play with a lot of strings attached but actually free. It’s an odd move, but nothing about our first game has ever been normal.

Love

Love is an odd MMO in that it’s a one man project. It’s also odd in that it’s an MMO that’s been released for free. In fact, almost everything about Love is odd in a totally delightful way. The game’s graphics, gameplay and world all mark it as unique and while you won’t find as much content here as you do in other major MMOs (creator Eskil Steenberg’s been working on it for five years but he is just one man) there is enough of a sense of wonder and enough clever and bizarre gameplay moments to make it worth far more than the price of admission.

PAX Prime 2012: SimCity Preview

Simulation fans have been pining for a new SimCity since the release of SimCity 4 in 2003. Sure, there’s been games between then and now, like SimCity Societies and SimCity Social, but they just aren’t the same. They aren’t what PC gamers want from the series, and it looks like Maxis and EA have finally acknowledged that with a new title in the series simply titled SimCity.

It looks good, too. Not another middling offering meant to make what money it can between major releases, but a proper SimCity that doesn’t mind being cutesy and somewhat cartoonish in exchange for quality gameplay. While SimCity has never been overtly serious in tone, this new direction highlights exactly what proper SimCity has always been about: having fun.

As I stepped up to the demo station at PAX 2012 to get some time with the game, I noticed just how massive the machine was that I’d be playing on. It towered over me as I played, glowing green and showcasing the Nvidia technology that SimCity ostensibly "runs best" on. However, as I moved around the simple starter town that the game provides, I realized that it doesn’t really matter what machine you run the game on; the art style allows it to look beautiful on any machine, as the highly stylized nature of the visuals make the game seem totally scalable across a variety of machines.

The demo started with a short tutorial that introduced me to the basic elements of gameplay I would need to know before starting. Thankfully, it didn’t teach them through long text prompts and boring arrow pointers; it taught them by showing. I got an alert that said that local business owners needed more space to work and that they needed me to zone out more space in the city for commercial use. If it wasn’t for this demonstration, I would have had trouble later down the line when trying to build businesses on residential or industrial property without the proper zoning requirements.

Hands-On With Steam’s Big Picture Mode

The big news out of Valve this week is their move into the living room with a new version of Steam. I got a chance to poke around Steam’s new Big Picture beta and while I was impressed by what I saw, I don't think this is the ultimate solution to gaming on the TV some may be hoping for.

If you’re not familiar with Pig Picture, it’s a new beta product released by Valve on Monday that promises to make the company’s Steam gaming platform more TV-friendly. And it succeeds at that challenge; Tthe Big Picture interface apes the best interface tricks of set-top boxes and game consoles. Big bright buttons with stripped-down and easy-to-navigate interfaces abound.

Most impressively, Valve has implemented a new lotus keyboard method for typing without a keyboard that uses the thumbstick of your Xbox or PS3 controller to let you type. Instead of laboriously navigating to each letter, you navigate to a general part of the alphabet by pressing in a general direction on the stick and then move in a second direction to choose a specific letter with your second stick.

It’s more complicated to explain than the typical on-screen keyboard, but in action it’s both faster and more elegant.

The problem with Big Picture isn’t with Steam’s design but with my own set-up. It’s an ideal solution for gamers with a very specific tech loadout. A big TV relatively far (but not too far for screen-mirroring) from their PC that’s loaded up with the kinds of FPS and casual games that translate easily to a controller. With my small apartment and eclectic taste in games, Big Picture is more of an interesting diversion than a new way of gaming.

In some sense it’s unfair to knock Valve for failing to release a beta product that’s all things to all people, and I want to stress again that Big Picture does some truly impressive things. The lotus keyboard in particular is an interface innovation I expect to see on every set-top box and game console in a few years. Still, if I want more from Big Picture it’s because Valve certainly seems to be expecting (or at least hoping) for more from it as well.

In their press materials concerning the new beta Valve has repeatedly claimed that they’re looking to see what users will do with the new mode. While I didn’t find a place for Big Picture with my specific tech set-up, Valve did a great job on the design and interface front that makes me excited to see what users will come up with for it as well.

The natural question that most of the gaming and tech press has asked in response to Big Picture is

was no problem at all. Using Logic Pro, and playing all the instruments himself, Foster was able to write and record the single in just a day and a half. After the demo went viral on the web, the song climbed the charts and eventually became a kind of fan anthem at the band’s typically sold-out concerts.

Following a decade working dead-end jobs in Los Angeles while trying to make it as a songwriter and musician, a career-launching hit was more than Foster could reasonably have hoped for. But

McDonald's Adds Calorie Counts And Maybe Grilled McNuggets To Menu

Keoni Cabral/Flickr.com McDonald's gives its menu boards a makeover by adding calorie counts.

If you didn't know that a Big Mac has 550 calories, or the Southwest Chicken Salad has 290, those numbers will be hard to miss the next time you visit McDonald's.

That's because the fast-food giant announced today that it will begin posting calories on its menu boards right above customers heads in the restaurant, and at the drive-thru starting next week.

McDonald's USA President Jan Fields says after talking with customers, it's clear they want more information. "They asked us to make it easier to find nutrition information at the restaurants," she says. (In fact, the company has offered nutrition information about its products for decades, if you knew to ask for them or to flip over the paper on your tray.)

As we've reported before, studies suggest it's not clear that adding calories to menu boards will change consumers decisions. A recent International Food information Council Foundation survey found that most of us are pretty bad about calculating our calories

Fed Stimulus Expected, But Remedy May Not Be Right

The Fed's Other Big Power

Alex Brandon/AP

Give us a sign.

We think of the power of the Federal Reserve as the power of money. After all, the Fed is the one institution that can create U.S. dollars out of thin air.

But recently, Ben Bernanke has argued that the Fed has another, critical power: the power of words. And when you're the chairman of the Fed, a few words can go a long way.

In a speech last month, Bernanke said this: "The Federal Reserve will provide additional policy accommodation as needed to promote a stronger economic recovery ..."

After the speech, the TV business channels went wild, suggesting that big Fed action was coming soon.

But how does the magic work? How do a few cryptic words get everyone so worked up?

Joe Gagnon, a former Fed economist who now works for the Peterson Institute for International Economics, pointed to a single word in that one sentence: "stronger"

Saying "stronger" recovery is "making it clear that this recovery we've had to date is not strong enough, in their view," Gagnon said. "That's a indication that they feel the need to do more."

It's subtle. But sentences like that provide a signal to investors so they don't get surprised when the Fed wants to do something big. When trillions of dollars are at stake, surprise is bad.

And as cryptic as it might sound sometimes, the Fed is now more clear and direct than its ever been in its history.

Just 20 years ago, the Fed didn't even tell the public what it was thinking or doing. People had to watch money moving in the markets to figure out what the Fed had decided to do.

These days, Ben Bernanke says that communication
